SALT / SODIUM

DELIVERY

We provide a delivery service where we will put the softener salt into your water softener every 6 weeks so that you don't have to worry about running out.  We highly reccommend the use of our AIM salt since it is refined to a high level of purity eliminating the need to clean brine tanks on a regular basis.

Sodium

While many people use the words salt and sodium interchangeably, they aren't the same thing. Salt is made up of a mix of 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride. Sodium is an essential mineral, but you only need small amounts of it for good health. Americans consume an average of 2,300 to 4,700 milligrams of sodium each day, which is higher than the recommended limit of 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams. Consuming too much sodium increases your risk for high blood pressure.

SODIUM IN SOFTENED WATER

Since sodium is added to water softened by the cation exchange process, the level of sodium in softened water may be of interest.  For every grain of hardness (17.1 ppm) in your water the exchange process will put in 7.33333 milligrams of sodium (NA+) in a quart of water.  CONTACT US

CONTRIBUTION OF SOFT WATER TO TOTAL SODIUM INTAKE

People with high blood pressure should not be concerned about drinking soft water due to the addition of sodium.  Natural foods contain sodium such as 2% Milk has 100 milligrams of sodium per 1 cup.  Processed foods are extremely high in sodium such as 1 slice of white bread has 150 milligams and fast foods are off the chart, franchised roast beef sandwich has 869 milligrams.  Assuming a daily dietary intake of 5 grams (5,000 milligrams) of sodium (NA+). The consumption of 8 glasses of  water at 20 grains hardness the contribution to the sodium (NA+) from the drinking water is 149 milligrams or less than 3% of the daily intake. To draw another comparision simply look at the sodium content in prepared foods.

DIFFERENCES IN SALT

Salt is sodium chloride. The difference between the different water softener salts is the way they are processed. ROCK salt is produced when they mine the salt from the ground. This salt will have a high percentage of silica (sand) in the salt. This salt is generally used as road salt.  SOLAR salt is processed from the salt lakes or oceans. Here the water is evaporated and the salt is left. This salt isn’t as contaminated as rock, but it still isn’t as clean as processed salts. PELLETS are processed salt where either rock or solar salts are washed and cleaned. Generally an additive is added to the salt to make it bind together to form the pellet. This additive can be a cleaner for water softeners or an iron additive to help combat high iron in water softeners. Generally, the amount of this additive is very small and does little to clean softeners.  Pottassium Chloride is a sodium substitutue that generally exchanges at a lower rate and is used in situations where the discharge is used for irrigation or people who prefer not to have the sodium chloride in their water. .

EFFECTS  OF SALT ON A SEPTIC

Yes/No The answer is in whom you wish to believe.  As of this date there are no reports showing that discharging water softeners into septics has harmful effects.  In some situations it actually shows that the additional discharge actually helps a septic to operate more effectively. However, in some areas of the country they have banned the practice due to fears of overload.  Studies have been done by Universities without any conclusive data.
