ARSENIC

WHAT IS IT?

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that is found in minerals and ores.  People have used it for centuries for killing weeds and insects, treating lumber, mining and other purposes.  It gets into ground and surface water supplies naturally through the erosion process and occasionally by pollution.

WHY IS IT A CONCERN?

Arsenic is known to be deadly to humans when consumed in high concentrations.  In low concentrations it is known to have a wide variety of lethal and sub-lethal health effects and can even pass to an unborn child.  The lifetime risk of 50 parts per billion in drinking water has has been estimated to add an additional 13 cancer related deaths per year. The present acceptable EPA limit is 10 parts per billion.  The US Geological Service estimates that about 8% of public water supplies exceed the new limit.

TESTING FOR ARSENIC

Total Arsenic can be detected through the use of a field test kit.  These kits today are used for gaining a general sense of presence or absence of arsenic.  A state-certified lab is needed for true quantification of parts per billion. CONTACT US

REMOVAL OF ARSENIC

The least expensive means would be to install a point of use filter with its own faucet; the line can also be ran to a fridge.  This would provide for your cooking and drinking water.  The filter would need to be monitored with a usuage meter and changed before it reaches capacity.  The drawback to this filter is that it would only removes arsenic.  A REVERSE OSMOSIS  membrane would remove the arsenic along with other heavy metals and other unwanted contaminants. By installing a system that includes carbon filtration your drinking water would be greatly improved by the removal of a majority of the organics and inorganics from the water. Or a point of entry (whole house) arsenic system can be installed to treat all of the  household water.Yearly arsenic tests are recommended to assure the system is working to full potential
